Chemicals and materials firm Chemours started work this week to commission its new $93 million Trail Ridge South mineral sand mine in Clay County, FL ahead of its planned startup later this year. Opening the new mine will enable the company to expand its access to raw materials used in the production of its Ti-Pure brand of titanium dioxide (TiO2).

“The commissioning of our new Trail Ridge South mine is much more than an operational milestone—it represents a huge win for our customers, community, and our country,” said Jody Sciance, co-director of Minerals Operations for Chemours. “This secure, domestic mineral supply means more tons of TiO₂ for our pigment customers, more jobs for Clay County residents, and access to critical materials identified by the U.S. Department of the Interior as vital to our nation’s security and economic prosperity—all with minimal impact on our local environment. We are extremely proud to expand our footprint in Florida and look forward to partnering with this community for years to come.”

Commissioning efforts are currently focused on testing operational aspects of the new location. The mine will incorporate Mobile Mining Units (MMUs) that will enable Chemours to reduce dust levels, cut emissions, and improve safety at the site.

98% of water used in the manufacturing process will be recycled at the site. The project also includes above ground process water and water treatment ponds with 39 million gal of storage capacity. Efforts to hire operators, technicians, heavy equipment operators, and mechanics for the facility are underway.
